The school takes full responsibility in the teaching of over 650 undergraduate students who major in forensic medicine, biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or food quality & safety control. We also offer over 40 foundation courses of medicine (approximately 15,000 teaching hours per year) to over 2500 undergraduates majoring in clinical medicine (including overseas students) , medical imaging, nursing, dentistry, laboratory diagnostic technology, radiation medicine, public health & preventive medicine, pharmacology and Chinese materia medica.

More than 40 well-equipped student laboratories (total 6750m2) are available for experiment teaching activities, which can accommodate 1500 students to work at the same time. Each year, about 10,000 hours of experiment courses are completed here.

The school strives to maintain and enhance undergraduate education to produce biology and medical graduates with not only the highest standards in research innovation and/or clinical expertise but also lifelong abilities to learn and to provide leadership. Our Immunology and Cell Biology courses have been awarded the title of “National Bilingual Model Course” by the Ministry for Education of China. Physiology course was named a “Top-quality course” by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education. Dr. Guo-Qing Wang was voted a “Most popular teacher for college students of Jiangsu province” in 2011 by Education Committee of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee. Our experimental medicine teaching program won the first prize for provincial teaching excellence in 2011.

During 2013 and 2014, our school was committed to educational reform, striving to cultivate innovative talents. The joint program 'Shangyin Gao Elite Class', co-sponsored by School of Biology & Basic Medical Sciences, Soochow University and Wuhan Institute of Virology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, is an excellent example for exploring cooperative education with outstanding research institutes. Five faculty members received a 3-months training in UCLA, USA to learn advanced concepts of medical undergraduate education, to further promote the curriculum integration of Outstanding Physicians Educational Reform Class, and to further improve the existing PBL teaching program. Moreover, in 2013, our faculty members published (as editors or associate editors) more than 20 undergraduate textbooks, completed more than 20 educational reform projects. Recently, a specialized grant (RMB 6, 500, 000) from the central government was awarded to a team headed by Dean Xiao-Ming Gao for developing a Medical Laboratory Course Platform.
